Momentum explained

ME01 – Momentum is a quantity….. you have ‘none’ or you have ‘some’

Summary….. Here is a help file to get a grip of these points:
– A road user’s journey is made up of being stationary and being moving.

– A vehicle, when stationary, has a quantity of momentum = “none”
– A vehicle, when moving, has a quantity of momentum = “some”

– A vehicle with a momentum = “none”….. cannot cause crash hurt and damage
– A vehicle with a momentum = “some”….. can cause crash hurt and damage
Therefore a driver needs to manage their momentum responsibly….. (drive safely)

A road users journey:
A road user’s journey, begins from stationary and ends at stationary….. the bit in between comprises a state of being either stationary or moving, as a driver negotiates around the road system, according to the rules of the road.

A road user’s journey, has here, been simplified down to two states:
1. Stationary
2. Moving

Physics (simplified)
Physics is all around and very complex, on a road user’s journey.
Momentum, however, can be related simply with the two states (stationary and moving), when it is honed down and defined into two simplified sentences.
1. An object that is not moving – has no momentum.
2. An object that is moving – has momentum.

Applying the physics to a road user
Applying the physics to a road user’s journey, matches well….. and two simple terms of “none” and “some” have been chosen.
1. An object that is not moving….. has no momentum.
….. so a stationary vehicle….. has a quantity of momentum = “none”
2. An object that is moving….. has momentum.
….. so a moving vehicle….. has a quantity of momentum = “some”

Relating this to road safety:
This relates to a driver’s attitude and conduct….. Here is how it applies
– A vehicle with a momentum = “none”….. cannot cause crash hurt and damage
– A vehicle with a momentum = “some”….. can cause crash hurt and damage
Therefore a driver needs to manage their momentum responsibly….. (drive safely)

Momentum is a quantity….. simplified to four key words:
Simplified….. you can talk about the quantity of momentum in these, already known, everyday key words:
1. None
2. Some
….. “None” is none, but “some” needs another two key words:
3. More
4. Less
That’s it…..

Here is how the four key words may be used:
Son: Are we there yet?
Dad: Not yet son. Now we have moved off from those red traffic lights we have some momentum again.
Son. How much momentum have we got, dad?
Dad: Some, now we are moving and more as we accelerate, son.
Son: We are slowing down for another set of red lights. How much momentum have we got now, dad?
Dad: Less now than before and less than that as we slow down further… and when we stop, we’ll have none again, son.
Son: A vehicle, when stationary….. has a quantity of momentum = ‘none’ and a vehicle, when moving….. has a quantity of momentum = ‘some’.
Dad: That’s very clear and well put, son.
Son: Yes. I just googled this website and read out part of the next paragraph, dad.
Son: Are we there yet?
momentary pause
Dad: Does the website say anything for kids on how long journeys take, son?
Son: Nothing, dad. Doesn’t even dare to try and tackle that issue, dad.
momentary pause.
Son: Are w…..

ME01 Summary
– A road user’s journey is made up of being stationary and being moving.

– A vehicle, when stationary….. has a quantity of momentum = “none”
– A vehicle, when moving….. has a quantity of momentum = “some”

– A vehicle with a momentum = “none”….. cannot cause a crash (hurt and damage)
– A vehicle with a momentum = “some”….. can cause a crash (hurt and damage)
Therefore a driver needs to manage their momentum responsibly….. (drive safely)

Next part is:
ME02 – Momentum is gained & lost…. you ‘dial it up’ and you ‘dial it down’
Followed by:
ME03 – Momentum is variable….. you change the mass and/or you change the velocity

* MOMENTUM is relevant for road safety.
* An awareness of momentum = an awareness of, mass, speed and direction…. all are relevant.
* An awareness of momentum = awareness to creating safer roads.

How to simplify and apply momentum to drivers on the road? Just read the above!

It can be a complex subject, and is, when going deeper and deeper into the subject.
Yet, here the subject has been chased down to, probably the ultimate simplified expressions for understanding and to use (road users use):
      * When stationary = “none”
      * When moving = “some”
      * A driver is responsible for the “some”

These simplified expressions are something that can be owned by all road users, both for self, and in observing / judging others, therefore very relevant towards social influence of road users.

      Very helpful.
