In road safety, an awareness of speed is an established named subject to consider.
A driver is also responsible for their vehicle’s mass and direction. If these were also named, it would focus another 2, making 3, named subjects for awareness.
It happens that the term “momentum” brings all 3 named subject areas… being: “mass“, “speed” & “direction“, to be considered.
In this Argue This prompt card:
Argue This: Awareness of mass = beneficial (regarding road safety).
Argument:
(assume the accident is same for both)
A. If a small car tail-gates another small car, all travelling at 30mph and an accident occurs, whereby… one collides with the rear of the other:
….. a certain amount of injury and damage, could occur.
Now this:
B. If a large lorry tail-gates a small car, all travelling at 30 mph and an accident occurs, whereby… one collides with the rear of the other:
….. a greater amount of injury and damage, could occur.
Sooooo…
For the same speed, in an accident, a difference in the mass of a vehicle, brings about a difference in the potential injury and damage.
Drivers are responsible
for their vehicle’s
Mass, Speed & Direction (Momentum)
